Choosing the Right Air Filter for Your Jacksonville, FL, Home
It’s extremely imperative to continually replace or wash your air filter if you live in Jacksonville, FL. Putting in mind that getting the wrong filter may reduce HVAC efficiency and its lifespan, you should conduct enough research to avoid unnecessary future costs. Here are a few pointers to help in choosing the right air filter:
Size and Measurements
Air filters don’t have a standard size, which is why there are so many sizes to choose from. Before you go to the store, either measure the one you currently have or look for any measurement markings. Typically, a home air filter is 1 inch, but some need filters of up to 4 inches. As for the size, some are adjustable. So keep that in mind if you can’t get one that perfectly fits.
Consider the MERV rating
The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating is the efficiency rate of your filter. The ratings range from 1 to 16, meaning the higher the rating the more efficient. However, getting a filter with the highest rating isn’t usually the best choice.
This is because the more efficient it is, the harder it’ll be to pull air through it, resulting in higher electricity bills. You’ll need to create a balance between higher filtration and energy efficiency. Most average households do just fine with a 7-9 MERV rating.
Standard Filter Types
There are many options to go with depending on your budget and needs. Keep in mind that whichever type you choose, professional installation and HVAC maintenance is what will ensure it’s working as efficiently as possible. You can choose from the following:
- Washable filters: Have low MERV rating hence not advisable
- Fiberglass filters: Protect the inside of the HVAC system and does little for improving your air quality
- Pleated/reusable: Best choice as they have a MERV rating of 9-16
