How to Protect Your HVAC System From Hurricane Damage
The hurricane season in Jacksonville, FL, can wreak havoc on your HVAC system if you don’t take the proper precautions. Follow these steps to protect your HVAC system from hurricane damage:
Get a High-Quality Tarp
A heavy tarp can shield your HVAC system from heavy rain and flying debris in high winds. Not all tarps are equal, though, and you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to HVAC coverings. Thick tarps made of vinyl or polyethylene tend to stand up the best over time.
Tie Down Any Loose Ends
Think of any loose odds and ends around your home as potential projectiles during a hurricane. If you have stray toys or anything else strewn across your yard, these objects could slam into your HVAC system when the wind starts blowing. Before there’s a chance of a storm, remove any possible projectiles from your yard. Also, trim away any nearby branches.
Power Down Your HVAC System
You don’t need to do this at the beginning of every year’s hurricane season. But you do need to turn off the power to your HVAC system if there’s a possibility of a hurricane landfall. The safest way to power down your HVAC system is just to go to your breaker box, look for the appropriate switch and flip it to the “off” position. Just to be safe, go over to your air conditioner and try to turn it on after you’ve flipped the switch.
