What is Geothermal and How Can it Help You Save Money in Your Home

Geothermal is a rapidly emerging technology designed to reduce monthly heating and cooling operating costs. In fact, Energy Star has once again certified ground source heat pumps as the most efficient HVAC products among those that are Energy Star certified. The pros at Cool R Us AC & Heating have the training and expertise to install and service every geothermal system currently available.

What is Geothermal?

Traditional HVAC equipment exhausts accumulated heat into the surrounding air. The process is degraded by severe temperatures. By contrast, geothermal uses the earth itself as the heat transfer medium. While the temperature of the outdoor air can vary by as much as 60 degrees, the temperature of the earth hardly changes at all.

Every ground source heat pump includes three primary components:

  • The conduit creates a connection between the equipment and the earth
  • The air distribution system includes the air handler, blower and evaporator coil
  • The condenser incorporates the condensing coil and fan to accommodate the refrigeration cycle

The equipment is connected to the ground through a special polyethylene piping network. Systems are available in either closed-loop or open-loop configurations. The closed-loop system uses an antifreeze solution circulated through the piping network, but the open-loop system must have access to a permanent water source. Closed-loop installations have become more popular since they’re easier to install and service.

How Geothermal can Help You Save Money

For those living in Jacksonville, Florida, and the surrounding area, ground source heat pumps provide the ultimate in energy efficiency. Trane split geothermal heat pumps offer efficiencies up to 27.6 EER (31 SEER). Compared to a traditional air-to-air heat pump, a ground source model can help lower your monthly utility bills, reduce repair costs and extend the life of your equipment.
